@lexd0g Was scared to all hell when building my PC and having to do a bios update. (And since I was using MSI's bios flash button instead, It was totally up in the air during that time whether I did it correctly or didn't. Luckily it worked)

@lexd0g I'm still astonished by how much consumer hardware fails to have convenient recovery procedures for that.

Basically every server and workstation does.

@loafofbread @lexd0g the ch341a is a tool for flashing the kind of chips usually used for your mobo firmware

it can recover boards from failed BIOS updates and for nerds like me you can use it to mess with the firmware and install alternative solutions (such as seabios, a really old piece of software that acts as legacy BIOS firmware)

@thememesniper @lexd0g I don't understand any computer stuff beyond minecraft command blocks, and I'm god with those, so enjoy this guy. He's your problem now. I don't know how to respond, so maybe he can simplify it in the most terrifying way when he gets back.

@loafofbread @lexd0g basically you plug the thing into your computer, and attach the clip to the chip and you can fix a failed bios update (or make it worse :3)

@lexd0g Except on machines with dual-bios™ (gigabyte) or ability to override the bios chip with another (PC Engines APU routers).

@thememesniper @lexd0g oh oh ch341a mentioned, remember to modify it before use because otherwise it can fry your chips!

@lanodan @lexd0g
My mobo can flash a bios even if it’s bricked from a specific USB port with a button

@dushman @lexd0g I don't think you know what bricked means, or your mobo effectively has a second bios.

@lanodan @lexd0g
That and I can always do it the old fashioned way if needed (gpio and cables lol)

@dushman @lexd0g That only works if you have the raw dump on hand or can manage to extract it, which isn't always the case.

@lexd0g i love it when my $2000 gaming rig's continued future hangs by a thread off of the coding skills of a single underpaid chinese dev

@lexd0g Why they’ve never made bios flashes revertable is beyond me. There should always be a way to restore to default.
