If you’re using AppImage to ship your app on desktop Linux you’re doing a huge disservice to your users by perpetuating the use of a broken by design format that doesn’t even work on the most popular Linux distros without jumping into a terminal. Please stop shipping this format. Don’t use it. Don’t let your friends use it. Package any other way than this please

pmbootstrap got some big refactoring today to it's "apk" handling.

It will now always run apk on the host (no more slow apk through QEMU!) and should do a slightly better job at caching packages.

https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmbootstrap/-/merge_requests/2463

This should make some things like building packages go faster!

If you're already running pmbootstrap 3.0 alpha you can "git pull" and give it a whirl.

WhatsApp running through android-translation-layer (no container!) on Linux desktop
Show content

cross-posted from: lemmy.kde.social/post/2232894

Since reddit.com/…/experimental_flathub_release_of_newp… got a bit of traction yesterday, this is WhatsApp straight from Meta running on Linux desktop using android-translation-layer.

android-translation-layer (ATL) is a Wine-like approach to run Android applications on Linux. Rather than running an Android container like for example Waydroid does this instead implements the Android API. Note that right now it’s very much work in progress and almost no app will work yet, but the fact that they have apps like Newpipe and WhatsApp running already is very promising!

The new "someone left their phone sitting there, take a funny selfie!" is the "open their ChatCPT app and mess with their 'Custom Instructions'."

lololol

I sometime still think about that cover of Sims 3: Katy Perry Sweet Treats pack. The way this looks like a bootleg but is actually official pack made by EA is sending me so much 😭

Time to make it official! I want to turn OS, GNOME's home-grown distro for testing and development of the GNOME Desktop, into a real production-ready general purpose OS. I finally blogged about it: https://blogs.gnome.org/adrianvovk/2024/10/25/a-desktop-for-all/

for is no longer developed on GitHub.

Find it on the Gitea instance for Aparoksha.

This is because GitHub is the very opposite of FOSS.

More information on Aparoksha here.

Luanti (formerly Minetest)

It's finally time. After years of deliberation, is finally ready to adopt a new identity and prove it has moved beyond its original purpose. We can finally move past the "mining" and the "testing" and focus on making this platform the best it can be.

It might have gone a bit under the radar given there has been a lot of related news these last weeks, but in the transition to gitlab's wiki, there's now a section with Board's policies: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Board/-/wikis/Policies#board-member-policies. We hope that helps with transparency and build more trust on directors' goals and duties. As a bonus, they should help new candidates next year understand what being a member is. Thanks @allanday for the great work on it!

Introducing Boson, the native Electon wrapper for Steam games because running Chromium inside Proton is a bad idea.

And yes, game devs actually write their games in Electron for some reason. Crazy we know.
