@kcseb @nathan consider how many people were dogpiling him with that in his DMs. Bad situation all around imo

@pastelscute @kcseb @nathan

He just started saying "kill yourself" to anyone even as much as slightly disagreeing with him.

Sorry but no matter what the situation is, that's a horrible thing to say.

@nathan Spend a decent time away to recover. You can't expect anything from people still looking to start a fight with you after you were dogpiled and broken down like that, its unfair on all accounts. Appreciate all the works you've done, truly. This was my first instance, and I'm damn happy to have been here. Please take care.

@Purple @kcseb @nathan I don't disagree that it's a horrible thing to say, but I do think that context is always important. Again, he's getting the same thing, plus being called a Nazi, a transphobe, a bigot. All in his mentions and DMs for a light ask for moderation. He was pushed to the edge, and people sometimes say bad things when pushed to the edge like that.

@pastelscute @Purple @kcseb @nathan@mastodon.lol

Disagree (but that's okay, we can do that peacefully)

Admins should be held to a higher standard - he did things no admin should be doing. What he should have done was withdraw from the situation for his mental health and another moderator could have taken over to handle the situation (but there are none..whoops!) but he chose not to do that and instead lash out at everyone.

He did not only tell people to "kys", he also DELETED at least one person's account outright.

You see where I'm going with this and why I have no sympathy for him. He could have made other choices. (probably an unpopular opinion, I can deal with that)

Even when someone is pushed to the edge, a little self-awareness wouldn't be a bad thing. "I know what i did, it was wrong & I apologize."

Perhaps some time to reflect would do him some good.

@alexpostfacto @Purple @kcseb
Admins are just people, and he wasn't hired to do this, he volunteered, his time and his money. This isn't Twitter where a person was hired for the position, this is a person doing this free of charge.

I agree, Admins should be made of stronger stuff, but you'll never really know if you are until you find yourself in the pressure cooker. He found out he's not built for this, and has quit. It's unfortunate it came to this but all parties are probably better for it

@Purple @kcseb @nathan Remember that this a person who took time and money out of there life to make a haven for minority groups for nothing in return. Built it in mastodon because this place was supposed to be different than Twitter, only for him to get dogpiled anyways over a freaking videogame. Called horrible things over a videogame. Even after everything he's done.

Like I said, it's a horrible thing he said, but otherwise good people can say terrible things when pushed to the edge.

@pastelscute @alexpostfacto @kcseb At the same time, no one forced him to start a mastodon instance.

When I started mine I was entirely aware what I was signing up for when I opened up registrations.
The further the instance grew, the more effect my decisions would have on people.

I can entirely understand being fed up, but I'd never in my life go rogue, it's simply not fair for my users no matter how "pushed" over the edge I am. Being done running an instance, fine, but removing and banning accounts because you're mad is not done. Calling people to off themselves is even more not done.

My account (this one) is for example suspended and no one on mastodon.lol can see my messages. Why? Because I said that telling something to kill themselves was a bit of an overreaction.

Absolutely out of line

@pastelscute @kcseb @nathan To reiterate, he told several LGBT people who were fairly polite about their criticism to kill themselves, and then refused to accept any responsibility for it.

Skimming his account would give you the impression that this is entirely about people being nasty to him, that he’s no more than an innocent victim, when the reality is that the pivotal moment in his decision to close the instance – the inevitability that external admins would suspend his instance for behaviour he was apparently unwilling to address – was his own doing.

@evelyn @kcseb @pastelscute

Agreed 1,000%. He doesn't deserve *anyone's* sympathy (and I don't understand why people are giving it to him). He knows exactly what he did yet he refuses to take responsibility for his actions.

He may be a victim of dogpiling (I'll give him that) but he victimized others in the process. Let's not pretend he's an average user, he's the fricking admin. He could've done something and nipped that in the bud and none of this would've happened. He chose not to. He made poor choices.

"It's a bad situation all around" - no, it really isn't. He made it a bad situation all by himself. He could've chosen otherwise.

Let's not forget he had all the power to dish out punishments for dogpiling and that's where it should have stopped. There are no other mods on *.lol, you know. He's the only one. He *chose* to let it spiral into the drama that it was. If anyone are the victims, it's the users of lol. They are the ones who have to suffer the consequences.
