Yahoo! 日本 is an example of a site that doesn’t attempt to redesign itself into something it shouldn’t be
@asahi95 I'm absolutely jealous of how there are so many Japanese mainstream pages that still adhere to the 90s-to-mid-2000s web design. I find it so much more pretty, legible and easy to explore & read than the sterile, boring corporate modern design thats everpresent everywhere nowadays 🥴
@endali I kinda dislike corporate modern design and modern sites these days, it’s just so plain and boring (not to mention full blown ads every corner, cookie popups, cloudflare, all of that bs.)
Japan has done a great job in keeping its old designs in place, that’s what they should always be doing and I hope it’ll continue forever on
I love Japan
@asahi95 I’m still not over yahoo and yahoo japan being 2 completely separate things
@blobcat I never even knew they were two separate entities until one of my Japanese family members told me about it
I’m quite impressed that Yahoo! thrives in Japan while over in the US they are completely ruined by Google
@asahi95 @endali Hmm, I kind of disagree.
Sure: Ads, popups, and so on are annoying. And there is a trend that “modern” websites must look a certain way.
But I think there are lots of interesting webdesigns that are truly modern, responsive, with good accessibility.
I build at least two websites for clients that are something special. Those were not run-of-the-mill of-the-shelf designs, but customs ones from professional creatives.
@sigmasternchen @endali I mean, there are some modern designs that do look quite amazing, not every single modern web design is all that bad
Although, I kinda like retro aesthetics better because they look playful, lightweight than the average Javascript page, and many other things!
@asahi95 i always thought yahoo japan was just a translated version of yahoo and they forgot to update the design
@blobcat Nah, it’s just its very own entity, owned by Softbank, and they don’t update the design because they don’t need to
@asahi95 i watched 2 videos on why japanese web is so different but forgot all of it too lol
@blobcat Lots of Japanese sites look a bit more old in terms of aesthetics but I kinda like it. People don’t bother so much on constantly redesigning the entire website to match modern standards so it’ll look much more familiar and stay that way to the user
@sigmasternchen @blobcat I suppose because Yahoo! Japan is well…. for Japan 😅
@asahi95 @blobcat
^^ I don’t think that’s the reason why.
My guess is that they don’t want to deal with EU privacy law. A lot of smaller US companies (especially news sites) do the same.
Although, now that I think about it, Japan is actually considered safe by the EU regarding data protection. So maybe there is another reason…
@sigmasternchen @blobcat Indeed it does, and they kept this UI because people are so used to it, so why change it up?
@sigmasternchen @blobcat Possibly, although Japan and the EU have been working together to bring data privacy into action, Japan also kinda made their own similar version of the GDPR in cooperation of this, called the APPI.
It’s viewable here if you want to check it out: https://www.ppc.go.jp/en/
@sigmasternchen @blobcat Same tbh, too much law text is too much for me, although they can be sometimes fascinating to read tbh
@sigmasternchen @asahi95 @blobcat Japan has data adequacy because it signed a treaty pledging to enforce the GDPR for EU citizens. This means companies can exchange data about EU subjects to Japan, like they would in the EU. The data adequacy framework makes it easier for the EU to enforce the GDPR on foreign companies.
But while that makes it easier for Japanese companies to process data, They will still have a lot of obligations under the GDPR and may as such choose not to target EU citizens (via geo blocking)
@sigmasternchen @blobcat I wouldn’t probably want to take a law class due to how much stuff there is to understand, although if I have to I guess I can at least learn some more stuff about law
@Tau @asahi95 these are the 2 videos I watched 5 months ago, I don’t really remember anything from them though
