do people unironically care about 3.5mm jack that badly
if even companies like fairphone and framework are removing them in favour of dongles there has to be a reason for it that isn't just saving on costs

i say this as an ""audiophile"" who hates bluetooth audio and always uses wired headphones
its like. nice to have i guess? but i just keep the usb-c dongle with a decent DAC inside connected to the end of my headphone wire and i can plug it into anything and it's effectively the same thing
maybe i'm just used to it

@ipg yes they do

if a 5.9 inch phone can have a headphone jack whats everyone else’s excuse

@ipg what would annoy me the most is charging.

i'd need to either get a *thick* dongle with both usb+p2>usb (if that even exists), or forgo using my iems while i'm charging my phone

@ipg i remember seeing this argument in like 2016 when the iphone 7 came out about how if you didnt have the headphone jack your charging port would wear out twice as fast. it was one of the stupidest things i had ever read

@ipg https://youtu.be/a3moaaOpYZM?si=JWbCWEi92K1ehBdB

if the apple dongle with no amp is fine then built in headphone jack is also fine

especially since phones have amps anyway

@ipg gee I wonder what the reason could be....

@ipg i think they should just go all the way and make phones fully wireless charge and esim and sealed waterproof (and provide ways for repair shops to break and reseal phones)

i feel like laptops should have them though

@ipg if companies marketed it as 'bring your own high quality DAC instead of using our cheap one' people would be all over the change :pp

although i'll admit the number of times i've just wanted to plug my phone into my speaker system without 3 additional steps is very high

@ipg it is objectively way less convenient. the big problem imo is charging my phone while using headphones
yes, there are dongles that support that, but theyre kind of unwieldy to use all the time

@ipg my galaxy brain proposal is that there should be a second usb-c port on top of phones

@Ariadne @ipg id rather have micro SD but no headphone jack like the fairphone over headphone jack but no micro SD (zenfone)

@ipg
framework’s reasoning, it seems, is that they want to make the aux port swappable instead of having it permenantly attached. they want to make it easier to swap the headphone jack in case its broken.
fairphone’s reasoning is fuck you that’s why.

@ipg my experience with wireless headphones is that

  • my first pair randomly broke on me
  • i left my second pair in my pants and they broke because they made it into the washer
  • my third pair still works fine but the left bud fell out of my head, bounced around and fell somewhere in my carpet, and i never saw it again.
  • i bought a $20 DAC on amazon and it randomly broke after a month.

in between the three points are countless connectivity issues (no, it’s not a linux issue because i encounter them on windows too), and issues where the third pair (which was $100) randomly reports the incorrect battery usage.

i actually just hold my phone up to my ear when i want to listen to music. i don’t care if it looks silly in public, i’m so fucking sick of this rigamarole, and i’m not buying another pair of wireless buds just for them to break or get lost again

@IoI_xD yeah, fairphone's reasoning is definitely at least partially financially motivated since they do sell wireless earphones (as do basically all phone vendors. conflict of timterest in the industry methinks, this is an undeniable problem for sure)

but given the at least somewhat decent public facing image they've given, it seems silly to throw some of that reputation away because of some few more pennies saved and headphones sold not including some headphone jack if not for an actual good reason otherwise (durability, size restrictions, etc)

@ipg back when it was first happening absolutely but nowadays everyone's gotten used to Bluetooth headphones and earbuds, some might prefer wired but people who refuse to live without the jack are definitely in the minority now

@IoI_xD iirc the Apple USB C to 3.5mm dongle is the highest quality performing (which doesn't really come as a surprise given how much effort Apple puts in anything audio related) and it's only $9, if you're in the market for a new dongle.

@IoI_xD Can’t say much about wireless earbuds just because I can’t use earbuds at all (every pair I’ve tried either wouldn’t stay in or was just sensory hell), but I’ve had some decent experiences with wireless on-ear and over-ear headphones. I’ve been using the same Sony WH-XB700 since 2018 and it still works like a dream.

@ipg dongles are often really fragile and are built horribly

@IoI_xD @ipg the Framework 13's headphone jack kinda sucked anyway so maybe the 16's expansion card jack will be better
