Gosh, NPR, I can't imagine how the Saudi authorities could have verified his identity on X.
I also suspect that the Saudi investors got what they paid for…
Previously, they had to go this more involved route:
“An FBI complaint and federal investigation in the United States led to the conviction last year of a former Twitter employee found guilty of failing to register as an agent for Saudi Arabia. He was also convicted of taking bribes in exchange for passing along the confidential user data of Saudi government critics.”

Just highlighting that paragraph from the article.
They seem to have made real efforts to get to their Twitter critics for some time, and it’s really chilling.

@ct_bergstrom The fact that @NPR failed to mention that the Saudis invested in Elon’s xitter takeover is borderline journalistic malpractice.

Isn’t Twitter being in cahoots with Saudi Arabia & exposing employees reason enough to investigate Twitter? Or is the @GOP protecting Musk as well as Trump?
Maybe the @thedemocrats should take good hard look in whose geopolitical beds Musk is snuggling up to these days?
These are the sorts of details that might’ve been relevant to mention in the story.
@ct_bergstrom see we need to eat the rich
@ct_bergstrom Saudi Arabia has a long and colorful history of spying on Twitter. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/former-twitter-employees-charged-with-spying-for-saudi-arabia-by-digging-into-the-accounts-of-kingdom-critics/2019/11/06/2e9593da-00a0-11ea-8bab-0fc209e065a8_story.html.
