gnome is good and if you think otherwise youre probably traumatised from pre-gnome 40 gnome

if you immerse yourself in the gnome software ecosystem its actually extremely comfy, theres so many neat little gtk utilities like parabolic, clapper, helvum, newsflash, amberol, and loads more

@nano tbh I argue that pre 40 gnome was good too in its own way

@itzzenxx yeah i mean i used it back then but when 40 came around it started getting really good since design became a big part

I could never get used to the way that it works, but the app ecosystem is really really nice

@itzzenxx @nano i've been a gnome user for the longest time, would say since gnome 3.32?. i feel like gnome is just a really good default experience while staying unique.

@nano I’m just not a fan of breaking everything every gnome release
I would like my system to not be that unstable

@JessiCum what? are you referring to extensions? because afaik they are working on sticking to a standard that wont break your stuff with every new release. as for apps and the desktop environment itself ive never had an issue with anything breaking with an update, just extensions

@nano that’s what I’m talking about.
I hope they do implement a standard too! that would make everything much better.
personally I think that cosmic’s extension method is much better. it’s not as easy to code for, but a broken extension can’t bring down the entire desktop, unless something breaks cosmic-session

@nano @itzzenxx ye, i mean to be fair i didn't have my own computer until i was 12, and my parents disapproved of me installing a linux distro on the family computer, so my first real experience daily driving a linux distro was in 2016 with ubuntu 16.04. then my first experience with gnome was when i distrohopped to fedora 30ish

@JessiCum i believe with gnome 45 theyre using a new format which i think theyre going to stick to for the foreseeable future. over the past few years its kinda been all over the place

@nano one thing I would want is running extensions in different threads. I’m not holding my breath, but that’s what would make gnome that much more stable.
and I’m not going to say gnome is that unstable, it’s just if extensions would be ran in different threads, it would be less likely to keel over.

A stable API for extensions would be really nice to have, I hope that that gets here soon enough

@nano it’s unlikely to happen, but I always wish for more stability. gnome is already pretty stable in terms of Linux, as long as you don’t use extensions.
now we see if they start letting themes work, as much as they hate themes, berating the user or distro builders for using themes is not going to solve anything, and frankly it’s just un-linux-like.
I don’t care if libadweita is good, allow people to choose if they want to use it.

@nano I keep thinking about giving it a proper shot but I'm also still fond of KDE's feel and theming

@JessiCum @nano Isn’t multithreading the one thing that’s almost guaranteed to be less stable?

More performant for sure though, but the way most software is written makes it hard to parallelize without introducing crashes due to improperly managed data access.

@Ollie @nano it depends on how it’s written though, if it’s more processes, it can be more stable, since if an extension crashes it doesn’t take down the whole system if coded properly.

@Ollie @nano and I do think gnome needs more performance however, it felt slow to me.

@nano Either that or they miss gnome 2

@nano True, but MATE is beginning to fall behind due to a lack of Wayland support, the fuckery needed for HiDPI, bugs in the window manager (E.g. signal-desktop freezes), and Compiz not being what it used to be IMO
