@dushman @maija tmux is still so dogshit i hate it the configuration is still shitty but yeah it does seem quite extendable if you VALUE YOUR TIME hehe

@dushman @maija @rat uhh, I find GNU screen sort of irreplaceable... is there something better that I just don't know about?

@rat @dushman yeah i hate computers honestly, as if nerds werent bad enough computer enthusiasts are way worse fucking intolerable
im talking to you dushman

@dushman @rat what your terminal emulator doesn't multiplex itself? you need a workaround? doesn't sound very extensible and usable to me

@maija @rat
I prefer tmux to using a tabbed terminal emulator. It’s especially useful for ssh since your active command won’t shit the bed if your connection drops.

@dushman @maija yeah tmux does seem really useful over ssh but i really dont see any reason other to use it than for servers

@rat @dushman i dont, he literally cannot shutup if people do anything differently. and if it was fair cool, teach me better, but its not, its "oh my cool hipster terminal thing is so cool. oh that doesn't work? yeah no theres this workaround just do this and this and this" and then when he see's, god forbid, something that Just Works™, oh no its so horrible because its not my hipster thing and uh bloat and xyz
he's the quintessential linux user, fanboy, and the reason linux fucking sucks ass because they're all the fucking same i can't fucking stand these faggots SHUT UP AND JUST USE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU DONT MAKE EVERYTHING AN ARGUMENT

@maija @rat
I’m not saying you can’t use a tabbed terminal emulator lol. I’m just saying tmux offers way more features if you want something with advanced capabilities. GNU screen is very antiquated does suck though.

@maija @rat
Though if all you want is having a persistent session on ssh and nothing else then screen works ¯_ (ツ) _/¯

@dushman @rat what do u even need that isn't covered?

@dushman @rat i've used tmux but it's a bunch of useless bullshit, i only liked the keybind changes

@maija @rat
Things like built in monitoring or respawning old sessions exactly as they were in the layout

@maija @rat
Also sane keybind and command structure unlike screen

1

@maija @rat
It has a vi like command mode which is a huge advantage over screen imo

1

@dushman @rat i dont like the gnu binds but that's disgusting, modes are overrated

@maija @rat
It’s like they made it a goal to make the most unintuitive and uncomfortable control schemes known to man (looking at you emacs defaults)

1

@dushman @maija @rat i'm over here using emacs with only like 5 custom keybinds

@Ukko @maija @rat
How do you not go insane? I have tried emacs a few times and the defaults are downright unusable.

It's like Vim when you first use it
Once you get used to it, they make a lot of sense

@Ukko @maija @rat
Ah, I run vim in tmux. Comfy for things like writing scripts and actively testing/debugging them right there.

@dushman @Ukko @rat vim has a built in terminal emulator

@maija @Ukko @rat
It’s deprecated and was an optional plugin lol

@dushman @Ukko @rat yeah thats not what im talking about
vim 8 in 2016 added a terminal

@Ukko @dushman @rat KINDA LIKE EVERYTHING IN EMACS hint hint dushman

@maija @Ukko @rat
Well it doesn’t include several of them, a web browser, man, rss reader and several IRC client lol.

1

@dushman @Ukko @rat so? just dont use those, they're optional. lisp is interpreted. literally a nonissue to have. only harddrive space, which you can just, delete them

We have problems if you can't spare a couple of hundred MB of memory for the only editor session that you use for everything

@usernameswift
I mean if a program can be more efficient without sacrificing practicality it should be

Fair, but Emacs is just a heavier editor because of how it does things
Different target audiences

@usernameswift @maija @Ukko @rat @nishi
I mean if you say the same about a dozen different things you’ll just end up with an unnecessarily bloated system

@usernameswift @maija @Ukko @rat @nishi @iska
Emacs idling uses 136mb of RAM with defaults just idling. My vim config with several plugins uses 10mb idling lmao.

@dushman @usernameswift @maija @Ukko @rat @nishi blame it on the default config of your distro, emacs used to run on atari ST.

@iska @usernameswift @maija @Ukko @rat @nishi
Yeah, used to. I’m pretty sure it uses the defaults specified by GNU themselves.

@dushman @usernameswift @maija @Ukko @rat @nishi you can configure it to use less RAM yourself, everyone else would rather have convenience than jack off about RAM usage
