i know i'm beating a dead horse, but i wanted to add that many of the accusations instances get in thebad space go completely baseless.

also the "common association" blocks are absolutely ludicrous. heck, you may as well block every instance because "oh they associate with x asshole which associates with y asshole so they're also an asshole"

donotsta.re for instance gets flagged with "hate speech" despite being pretty vocal about not interacting with any instances which actually promote it. silly as fuck

@m i mean, if an instance is being close with other hateful one, it says something about the users/admins preferences.

@skrlet13 but this is not even a case of being close. for example instances which are basically not even comprised of hateful tendencies and are not partners of any hate speech instances got thrown under the same boat. for instance, donotsta.re or snowdin.town (welp, when it was alive anyways)

@m @skrlet13 I remember what got people upset about snowdin! It wasn't particularly a guilt by association thing. I don't remember what specifically started the chain of events, but something something snowdin user gets called out for being racist, person doing the callout gets dogpilled on, and then ensuing fediblock posts. Snowdin seemed to have a reputation of being wholesome on the post-pleroma side of the fedi, and they obviously really wanted to protect that, massively overcompensating in the wrong direction

I have no receipts for this myself, for what it's worth. It's probably lost to time now that snowdin's shut down, so you're more than welcome to take this with a grain of salt.

I feel like 99 percent of the time I see stuff like this go down it's more or less the same recipe. People generally do not respond well to being called out. We get very defensive. And, of course, seeing people get defensive when you call them out in and of itself can be very triggering, since that's when things start to escalate, as it did with the snowdin user

I thought about joining snowdin.town before coming here, but I remembered seeing that chain of events and idk. It just seemed like the community handled it so poorly. But otherwise, they all seemed very nice.

community guidelines

  1. you must be over 14 years old to join. coral castle's servers are hosted in chile, and under article 19,628 of the laws of chile, we are unauthorized to collect data from people under 14.

  4. hate speech, paraphilia, and harassment will get you banned. having basic human decency is key anywhere. whether it is in real life or on the internet, don't be a jerk.
  5. keep things legal. this includes pirated content, since we want to keep a good relationship across fediverse servers. posting CSAM is strictly forbidden and will result in legal action.

moderation policies

the sanctions for local users will be relative to the gravity of their infringements, varying from simply deleting the offending material, to warning the user through a three-strike system, to immediately banning the offending user.
