Can we stop having literally everything be on Discord? I checked out a cool Pokemon fan game, but literally everything to do with it, including downloading it, was locked behind joining their server.

Please stop doing this, Discord wasn't designed for this, there's a limit of how many servers you can join, and you're just asking for that information to be lost someday. dragnangry

@TempestDerg
I honestly hope that Discord collapses so I can leave for something better and so we can stop centralizing information in a hostile place.

@hellbeast Same, but at this point, it feels like rooting for the Library of Alexandria to burn because of all the stuff only posted on there. It's extremely frustrating.

Someone should really make a tool that can export and archive everything that's on a discord server in the mean time before the inevitable with for-profit social media platforms happens.

@TempestDerg
That's https://github.com/Tyrrrz/DiscordChatExporter really, though this tool is only useful for single backups and I would like something like an IRC bouncer program that can continuously record history.

@hellbeast Also, at least it kind of makes since in this case because of how much Nintendo restricts the hell out of Pokemon fan games. The one I'm talking about here is Pokemon Infinite Fusion, and that one is popular enough that if it were on its own website at this point, Nintendo would've already sent their ninjas after them.

@hellbeast It's a start at least. Mostly worried about the servers that act as file repositories, with entire modding communities only sharing stuff on them.

@TempestDerg
Free storage hosting is free storage hosting I suppose, I have a feeling the storage that Discord hosts can't be sustainable.

But I'm eepy ouupy so that's dread to worry about another time

@TempestDerg
Also please consider that there are people that can not join Discord at all

@Laberpferd True. Any sort of info that isn't available without an account may as well be inaccessible to everyone.

@TempestDerg drives me up the bloody wall. Usually when I want to download something I am not interested in your (knowing how big servers tend to be) shitty community.

@stefan Pokemon Infinite Fusion. Only played a little bit of it so far (mostly spent a lot of time trying to get it on my Steam Deck), but it's pretty fun so far and has an insanely active community working on it. Unfortunately everything's on Discord, but that's besides the point.

Also I just tend to post random thoughts I have on here. This was kind of ranty, but try not to stay negative on here, it cultivates a pretty unhealthy space.

@TempestDerg Unfortunately, online storage, resources, and maintenance cost. The convenience of having a meeting spot in addition, for free* is too good to turn down.

*free for now, at least at some level.

@staidwinnow True, but there are other options that aren't nearly as restrictive to outsiders, like dedicated forums and modding websites like Nexus and the Steam Workshop. I can definitely see the draw for the forum aspect of things though, as Discord offers the most modern set of features for free. Just please have the downloads available elsewhere, Dropbox and Google Drive still exist.

@hellbeast @TempestDerg

Discord is the least fascist of the corporate social media

Yes. Discord.

Multiple instances is just too hard.

@TempestDerg Anyone else here think discord is rubbish?

@Deadcert @TempestDerg It's a tool, and like many popular tools it has a scenario it does quite well, and a bunch of trash uses that people use it for because they don't want a tool box and just want a swiss army knife style hammer.

I use it to coordinate with my local game group, and that's it.

@grayson @Deadcert Yeah, it's great for communicating with groups and individuals, but it's just not a replacement for a repository or a support forum.

@rticks is that because it's owned by a company based out of China πŸ§πŸ’€

@fixiemama

China has no interest in benefiting american Capitalists so while they will censor the fuck out of shit, they allow more than the technofascist gnomes in the Twisted Silicon Valley

And I have ZERO fucks for the ccp

@rticks hey now, I was just making a joke about facism and communism being at same point on the circle of political approach. but glad to know where you're at, for sure.

@Nikki_Asdo Infinite Fusion, but it's so common that could throw a stone at any popular fan game/project right now and find an example of this

@pixel Pokemon Infinite Fusion. They at least have a wiki anyone can access, but the download is locked behind the Discord server (which is honestly worse than locking the wiki imo)

@TempestDerg ah word! infinite fusion looks fun, i kinda wanna try nuzlocking it bc the buildcraft/teambuilding looks crazy lmao

@pixel Only played a little so far, but it is fun. There's even a built in randomizer if you're into that. Also plays well on the Steam Deck, but you'll have to do a lot of set up to install it.

@TempestDerg

Discord sucks and a lot of stuff is unnecessarily hosted on servers for no reason; but I will forgive a pokemon (or any Nintendo) fangame for being discord only.

Any Nintendo fangame that doesn't *strictly* filter out means of distributing and accessing it gets hit with a C&D or worse. Metroid Planets is under the same tight lock and key for that reason.

@SoberDwarf That is true and I mentioned it in a reply in the comments of this post. It was just the example that inspired me to write this, there are plenty of other things where this is the case and it doesn't have to be.

@vriska This was about Pokemon Infinite Fusion, but there are plenty of other fan games and mods that are locked behind this sort of thing. At least this one has an excuse because of how strict Nintendo is about fan games, Pokemon especially.

@TempestDerg I wonder what Discord was designed for. Feels like a a bloated IRC sideproject made by mad IT students that implemented whatever came to them in the most bloated way.

@otyugh Pretty sure they did the functional text and voice chat first, made servers for grouping people, then did you you said from there.
