terraforming mars into a habitable world is the science equivalent of an afterlife

no matter what happens, fixing earth is easier than terraforming mars. promises of colonising mars are purely an excuse to destroy the world we already have to the benefit of those that know they wont live to see the consequences

“we dont have to fix the world we have because in (indeterminate amount of time) well have a completely different world without these issues”

@coolbean without anarchism we won't be able to settle the moon before our eco-system collapses, wars for water take over the globe, empires nuke themselves etc. What bilions of people who can't leave for the moon? Fuck'em.

@trans_caracal of course, its an empty promise of paradise, would be a miracle if it were actually possible in time

@coolbean it would take a century, if not longer, to make it habitable to even the levels seen in Red Faction, and that wasn’t exactly hospitable

@yassie_j and now consider that in that time we could be applying similarly advanced technology to an already habitable planet just to guarantee it stays that way

@coolbean its crazy like . if you could terraform mars and make it habitable you can just ,,, do it to earth ?????? and itd be way easier ???

@fiore yea! we could start literally right now too, since we already have most of the hard shit out of the way and the problem is just keeping it habitable without erradicating humanity

@coolbean we will spend immense resources to create a new habitable world to make uninhabitable

@coolbean we promise that it'll be so fragile we'll be able to make it uninhabitable again in months to years instead of centuries

@coolbean I personally would like to ask the people excited about the idea of living on Mars if they'd like to live in the infinitely more habitable Antarctica they could reach right now at a fraction of the cost. You can actually return from there too!

@elexia i mean i would, ive worn one of those insulated suits they wear outside and they’re quite comfy actually

@coolbean the antarctic stations have strict quarantine policies, so you actually get to live without COVID for a while, which is nice.

@elexia they just keep getting better god damn

for the low low price of actually having a relevant degree you get to avoid covid and the summer heat

@elexia @coolbean

and there is no regolith in Antarctica. Mars is covered in it.

@elexia @coolbean We have a *lot* to learn about ecosystems before we could possibly begin terraforming another world.

The best way to deepen our knowledge of ecosystems is by studying and restoring the ecosystems we live in.
