What do my fellow linux mobile nerds think of the FuriPhone / FuriOS that was announced like, last month?

Saw it and immediately remembered the JingPad / JingOS combo that disappeared as most of us predicted

And what abt libhybris and halium? Is that a valid way to be approaching the linux / arm64 drivers issue, or no?

Idk, geekout at me and tell me your thoughts on this

@CalcProgrammer1 But it sounds like these solutions decrease the chance an actual linux driver will get developed though, is that an accurate guess..?

@MadameMalady

Is libhybris ideal? No. Does it give us more functional daily driveable phones right NOW that could help keep people using Linux and being interested in long enough for better, mainline alternatives to mature?

Absolutely.

I don't know a lot about the specific phone experience, but I'm glad we have as another rung in the ladder, helping us to climb up to full, mainline Linux phones. Right now we need all the help keeping people engaged, that we can get.

@MadameMalady uh, i don't want to talk badly about it cause someone i care is working in some things in there, but i don't trust the CEO, he dropped the support for like 8 devices in droidian, if you update some of these devices, they will brick, i bought 3 devices that had official support in droidian, and now, only one can boot droidian reliably, he shipped a broken port as official in droidian, that port almost broke my phone (it was always at 100% of cpu usage when you use a sim card), and that's only without talking about his actitude, im only thinking about buying one to support the guy that i know, but if you want to support the linux development for phones, i don't think it's a good choice (btw, as almost all new brand phones, it's just oem https://www.gigaset.com/es_es/gigaset-gx6/)

@pan Okay, that's good to know.. I thought it was odd the sales page specified that like, messing with the software install fully could ruin the warrenty (idk how to spell that word, whatever), like it's suposed to be a linux phone, messing with them is *what we do*

@MadameMalady And talking about the device itself and not my concerns about the company, i can't see a future where halium is feature parity with mainline, as they can't aren't using the same technology, no camera support with the camera portal as they are not using pipewire (in any aspect, not even for audio), flatpak gtk4 apps are broken in droidian (it should be fixed in furios tho), no support for gnome shell or other non halium compatible shells... i don't know, there are a lot of recent phones where you can run postmarketos, more than you expect, today i discovered that you can run pmos in the poco x3 nfc, and even the fairphone 5!! (without audio yet)
