First part of the Nautilus file chooser implementation by @antoniof was merged!!!
And now the second part of the file chooser implementation was merged :)
#GNOME #GTK #Nautilus #FOSS #OpenSource #GNOMEFiles #libadwaita
Part three of the file chooser implementation was merged!
#GNOME #GTK #Nautilus #FOSS #GTK4 #OpenSource #GNOMEFiles #libadwaita
Part four of the file chooser implementation was merged!
#GNOME #GTK #Nautilus #FOSS #OpenSource #GNOMEFiles #libadwaita
@TheEvilSkeleton how many parts does this have lmao? Also does this replace the gtk portal file picker?
@QuadRadical not sure about portal, but it'll replace the GTK file picker on GNOME
@QuadRadical Currently open PRs go up to 7, so at least 7 probably more
Part five of the file chooser implementation was merged!
@TheEvilSkeleton Oh I'm really looking forward for this :D
Holy crap they did it! Nautilus FileChooser implementation has been merged!
Nautilus is getting a new file chooser dialog for the GNOME desktop, replacing the current GTK4 file picker, which will also be mobile-friendly.
The mockup can be found on GitLab: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/app-mockups/-/blob/master/files/file-chooser/file-chooser.png
@jorge I edited the post to explain what it means in practice :)
@TheEvilSkeleton Oh ok so instead of a filepicker I get nautilus itself acting as the filepicker?
@jorge yep, although it doesn't "act" as the file picker; it literally is a file picker
@TheEvilSkeleton and they fixed the "always opens context menu on scroll" bug recently so mobile is about to get a whole lot more poggers 💯💯
@purpleidea it'll automatically be unified for every app that uses the FileChooser portal, but apps like LibreOffice will continue to use their own file choosers.
I just updated my Fedora Silverblue (Rawhide) system, and was greeted by the beautiful Nautilus FileChooser implementation 👀
@TheEvilSkeleton it just landed on arch gnome-unstable and its actually so fucking good
It's quite fascinating how GNOME went from having the worst file chooser objectively to the absolute best
@TheEvilSkeleton weird how a couple of years of planning and doing the work without quick hacks and workarounds to please redditors end up making a solid result, huh?
@joojmachine it's almost as if quick hacks and workarounds don't solve the inherent problems
@TheEvilSkeleton What about the effort put on making thumbnails (after 10s of years) work on the previous file picker, if it had to be replaced by nautilus itself after some time.
@scientiac the GTK4 file chooser is desktop agnostic, whereas the Nautilus file chooser is only for GNOME. If Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, or any other GTK-based desktop ever ports the desktop to GTK4, they'll benefit from the work done on the GTK4 file chooser.
@nekohayo @TheEvilSkeleton @antoniof thought this was ganna be a cringe meme video but no I actually laughed
@ngz0 @TheEvilSkeleton I want a preview pane too. Both in file chooser and file browser.
In the meantime, the `sushi` previewer is still there. Effort has been made to make it work from the file chooser.
Not perfect, but gives the ability to preview images from the file chooser.
@nekohayo @TheEvilSkeleton I wouldn't have been able to reach the required level to defeat it this soon if not for the 11-weeks "premium access" sponsored by #SovereignTechFund through the #GNOMEFoundation thanks to @sonny
