for the first time i want to commit to exclusively using free and open source software on my phone, but finding a replacement for Spotify, Google Maps, DB Navigator and my banking apps is really hard

i can still use google maps and bahn.de in the browser, and with lots of effort convince my bank in Bavaria to send me a TAN generator for confirming transactions, but living without a music app that recommends me music based on my exact preferences is really hard

even if lots of people have issues with Spotify's algorithm (apart from the obvious privacy concerns, due to them being a data mining & analysis company), it works really well for me and open source privacy frontends to for example YouTube music just don't give you that

i will be setting up a gonic/subsonic server in the future if i manage to find a subsonic android client that doesn't have trash UX, but even if i stream my flacs from my own server i'm still missing recommendations and radio/autoplay based on my initial song pick

@alina maybe it’s okay to use mostly foss but have spotify because it’s just like worth it tbh?

@alina@girldick.gay I like Wise (online bank) because they don't require the app for anything, and I actually didn't even download their app for like a year or so.

(Also if you do decide to register to Wise, pls let me know because apparently there's a referral thingy)

@alina it has a pretty steep learning curve but I've genuinely been happy with OsmAnd for 90% of my mapping needs. It's an acquired taste 😅 but now I don't really wanna go back. Osm sucks on desktop though/ there's no great integration between any desktop Osm client And OsmAnd AFAIK

@lunareclipse i've tried it, it's ugly and slow as hell even though i put in the effort to download all important maps which really shouldn't be the problem of the user

the buttons are all placed so i can't quickly access anything without stretching my hand into an uncomfortable position

@alina tbf I just use google maps in a browser 50% of the time

(although that is miserable because google only put like 30% of the features of the app in the website)

@alina I’ve been living with web Soundcloud (somewhat algorithmy) and alternative Youtube frontends and proxies, things are getting harder these days tho…

@alina @spacekookie I recommend organicmaps, a better frontend to osm data.

@cafkafk yeahhh that's what i've done for the past years, but being able to verify that no proprietary code (except some firmware blobs, which are taken care of by grapheneos iirc) is running on my device would feel great

@ijomeli @lunareclipse @alina
+1 to organic maps. So much prettier and faster. Biggest thing I miss is busses, which depending on where you are can be a pretty big hole.

Biggest thing I miss about google maps in the browser is the ability to filter my search by "open now".

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be @alina@girldick.gay I'm pretty sure I'm on some list of suspected money launderers considering how many accounts in different countries I have, and at this point they're not even all in the same name exactly...
