PSA for anyone who has a Stadia controller: if you want to prevent it from becoming e-waste, you should update it to Bluetooth mode *now*, even if you don't plan on using it yourself anymore - that way it can be used as a stand-alone controller in the future.
This update is possible until December 31: https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_US.html
@joepie91 It’s fortunately also possible to do this offline; the update process doesn’t involve any server authentication or anything like that, and I have successfully gone to and from the Bluetooth Mode firmware from a local copy of the software and firmware downloads, even back when the updater was first released
@joepie91 a few people on Reddit did it too I think, though don’t have links handy
just a shame the firmware is signed, else there are a lot of cool things that could be done with all the compute power in the controller!
@joepie91 Why the fuck is there a deadline on a firmware update
@natty I'm guessing that they'll take the firmware flashing utility offline after that? It is Google, after all, they do historically seem to have trouble keeping a webpage up beyond the lifespan of a domain renewal cycle
@Clygro I assume that's because it uses WebUSB for flashing, which I think only Chromium has
