welp funniest thing happened:
- i downloaded the entirety of adventure time in HEVC 10 bit
- realized that format wasn't being transcoded on jellyfin, my server CPU does not support transcoding it through QSV, and my computer struggles to play it natively
- realized jellyfin wasn't transcoding ANY formats in fact, and it was due to alpine not shipping a version of ffmpeg that can actually take advantage of QSV
- switched jellyfin install to docker
- now it's transcoding and somehow it can transcode HEVC 10 bit without using QSV

what.

welp, in a nutshell i saved myself €10, but i still need to replace the hard drive because i'm running out of storage and i don't trust my current hard drive due to it being an 8 year old desktop hard drive

so essentially it's not made for the use case i'm putting it through. i found a really good deal for a 4 TB "dell" (toshiba) hard drive which has just 4 hours of use and is more suitable for the tasks i'm putting it through

looking further, this hard drive has an MTTF of 1.4m hours, which is MILES better than the toshiba p300's (current hard drive) 600k hours

also, it retails for about €200, so this is a bargain

this will also allow me to back up coral castle, which has not incorporated regular backups yet, mainly due to lack of resources. i have near the server a NAS for which i might be able to get assigned some storage
