Huh. Interesting. If you log-out of Google Maps, you get an inferior experience. All the roadways are in a greyscale design (making it difficult to tell them apart) and not only that, each zoom level loads everything all over again, instead of smoothly moving (even if it’s fake) in and out. It’s quite a jarring thing to do.
