I hate how children get to have absolutely no privacy or autonomy (bodily or otherwise) in the name of "parental rights" and protecting them. Discord recently introduced a feature that would allow parents to have a dashboard that lets them see who their kids are talking to and when and like β€” that would have actually made my life horribly worse when I was a teenager and my only friends were kids from a writing server online and I had to keep it secret from my mom because she didn't think online friends were real and that it was unhealthy to have them (despite her homeschooling me in the middle of a retirement suburb so I couldn't really make friends elsewhere). It would have actually probably led to the death or homelessness of one of my friends, who found me, and supportive people, and that she was trans, through that writer's discord. Fuck parental controls.

Edit: I've seen a couple people now come into my mentions echoing the exact rhetoric that I am railing against here β€” saying that we need to have these kinds of privacy robbing autonomy destroying controls over children's lives in order to protect them properly from predators β€” as if they haven't read this thread and think that just precisely restating the things that I am arguing against is some kind of response. Just echoing this disgusting rhetoric. Those people are basically getting instantly blocked and honestly they're doing everyone a great service by showing who they are.

Pros of doing the dishes immediately after each meal:

  • straightforward, procedural exercise of self-discipline
  • ensures the kitchen is always clean
  • is in and of itself a spiritual journey of restoration
  • would make the ghost of pat the bunny happy

Cons:

  • i don’t wanna

Am I frequently bothered and annoyed at most anarchists? Yes. But I also deeply appreciate them existing in this world with me and have great respect for most of the stuff everyone does. And I think the world is a better place because of most anarchist existing.

Which I think it's valuable to love that radical people exist in the world but understand that we may not like each other or be buddies.

(Not vague posting about anyone btw. Just it can never be stated that the anarchists who annoy me I still deeply appreciate)

holding opinions is inherently problematic. you should just do things and don't think

I walked into a conversation guns blazing today by making the claim that science is colonialist before realizing everyone disagreed with me, and ended up having to defend it almost from first principles. That was an extremely strange social situation to have to worm my way out of...

I feel like the internet has given me the opportunity to be a lot looser with my lips when it comes to expressing things that I believe but that often translates poorly into the real world when you're surrounded by real and often very normal people

it's a myth that tenants create maintenance costs. anyone living in a space creates maintenance needs. that's called wear and tear. there are also some kinds of maintenance that happen even if no one is living there, like roof repair or replacing a furnace.

owning property means needing to cover the costs of the property, whether you personally live there or not.

so landlords are really only giving up one thing, which is their own ability to stay in the property. many of them don't even want to stay in their properties anyway. so why do they have the property at all?

One of the guys responsible for the Web Environment Integrity proposal has an account on the Fediverse. I thought about doing a "go tell this guy how much you love WEI" post but it felt weird because he seems like such a normal guy. Like, he literally reads low-tech magazine. But somehow he also co-authored WEI.

Same with Ben Wiser publishing an article about how evil vendor lock in is on his blog. There's such a strange level of cognitive dissonance to being a Google employee

So, uh, if you see an orb in public, DO NOT PONDER IT, because it's going to steal your biometrics and give them to the worst people in silicon valley:
