i hate when people say children are only safe if adults control their bodies

they are so worried about kids harming themselves with "stupid decisions" but adults can make stupid decisions too and harm kids they have power over with those stupid decisions

i guess an example of a teenager making a stupid decision might be using harmful drugs, for example tripping on benadryl

but if your parents give you harmful drugs, whether for malicious reasons, or because of a desire to help combined with extreme lack of knowledge of how pharmacology works, there is nothing you can do about it. if you do something stupid that harms you, provided it doesn't kill you, you can learn from the experience, but if someone else harms you, you don't learn anything except that you are not safe and your body doesn't belong to you

and this definitely happens, probably more than you would think, my mom overdosed me on benadryl during a psychotic episode thinking it would help me sleep, i know a guy whose mom gave him experimental drugs from a paranormal researcher trying to make him mentally ill so she could collect disability off him, and tons of parents give their kids questionable home remedies

also teenagers absolutely should be able to access medical care without their parents' knowledge or consent if necessary, everyone freaks out about that, especially with stuff like birth control

but it's not okay to impose your religious or other beliefs about health care on someone else. if your parents are antivaxxers, you should be allowed to get vaccinated for diseases if you want, as soon as you find out that you actually want that

i went several years with chronic migraines and not going to the doctor or getting any kind of treatment for it because my mom was afraid doctors would push birth control on me if they found out i got a migraine every single period, and when i did go to a doctor they didn't suggest that at all much less force me to do anything (and i was an adult, but in a lot of ways being treated like a child because of being disabled and parents infantilizing me)

it's not okay for parents to decide you can't have certain types of medical care because they don't believe in it. it's not okay for parents to think they own your body.

It's kind of telling that the Billet Labs fiasco produced a way bigger backlash than the Madison thing.

Maybe because it came on the coattails of an already established controversy.. but the vibes in the YT comments are very different. Mostly ranging from SYMPATHETIC to LTT, to "she's hysterical", "she's lying", "go woke go broke" (???), "sexual harassment at work is perfectly normal", etc.

And no, I'm not gonna blur the names bc the comments are publicly available anyway.
