The open source industry burns out its contributors and has an ageing problem.

It's because open source is too fast-paced.

We're working on our projects with all our hearts and a few resources. With peers all around the globe, there will always be someone to work with. We need to take more time to reflect on why we do what we do, communicate it, and onboard others to ensure a more balanced and inclusive approach to our work.

It's not a tech problem. It's a people's problem.

@MadameMalady And talking about the device itself and not my concerns about the company, i can't see a future where halium is feature parity with mainline, as they can't aren't using the same technology, no camera support with the camera portal as they are not using pipewire (in any aspect, not even for audio), flatpak gtk4 apps are broken in droidian (it should be fixed in furios tho), no support for gnome shell or other non halium compatible shells... i don't know, there are a lot of recent phones where you can run postmarketos, more than you expect, today i discovered that you can run pmos in the poco x3 nfc, and even the fairphone 5!! (without audio yet)

@MadameMalady uh, i don't want to talk badly about it cause someone i care is working in some things in there, but i don't trust the CEO, he dropped the support for like 8 devices in droidian, if you update some of these devices, they will brick, i bought 3 devices that had official support in droidian, and now, only one can boot droidian reliably, he shipped a broken port as official in droidian, that port almost broke my phone (it was always at 100% of cpu usage when you use a sim card), and that's only without talking about his actitude, im only thinking about buying one to support the guy that i know, but if you want to support the linux development for phones, i don't think it's a good choice (btw, as almost all new brand phones, it's just oem https://www.gigaset.com/es_es/gigaset-gx6/)

So thanks to @rmader@mastodon.social we managed to get the front camera in the Pixel 3a working with a libcamera/pipewire stack 🥳 Thanks to @flamingradian for the work on the whole port!

EDIT: The driver does not properly release the camera when closing the app, so it only works once per boot. It would be lovely if anybody with the skills would like to contribute to improve it!

@bart yeah, i don't think so, thats just how gtk3 apps look, there is this libadwaita predecesor called libhandy, but lutris doesn't use it (btw, maybe you are happy to know that the mantainer is thinking about porting the app to qt, as they dont want to port it to gtk4)

Just got GNOME Mobile 46 built and running in @postmarketOS on my OP6, here at in Denver, so the folks in Berlin aren't the only ones that can try it out!

Come find me at the BoFs tomorrow if you want to play with it!

Thanks @cas for the help getting it building!

@bart afaik lutris is not a libadwaita app, it uses gtk3, so it should fit better (? (if not, then i don't know why is linux mint sticking to that)

@craftyguy @cas the problem is not about the technical side, but about ux, although it uses the same color and widgets that all your app uses, they won't follow the same guidelines, they will feel off even if they don't look off, sadly its's not something fixable

@EC_NGI and @nlnet make a dramatic impact to improve our sustainable, privacy and attention respecting ecosystem. One of the very few answers we have to the duopoly of Android and iOS from Silicon Valley!

Because of that we are saddened about the @EUCommission not mentioning NGI programmes anymore in their draft of funding programmes for 2025. 😢

We signed the open letter, consider doing the same if your project received funding in the past.

Is there anyone who is interested in taking over maintenance of this lovely chess timer app for written in ? It's pretty cool (and a member of GNOME Circle!), but its maintainer, the wonderful Clara Hobbs, is stepping away from the project. If this sounds interesting to you, reach out to them!

What is the current state of NFC on linux?

I want to write an HCE application for Asteroid and potentially other mobile linux targets but am having trouble finding information on where to start.

What toolkits should I use? Should I make my APDU handler a little library? Should provisioning be in that library or somewhere else? How do I register an AID with the system? How do I shove APDUs back at the reader? Is any of this even possible yet?

If anyone knows anything about this please reach out.
