how the fuck is the mile even derived, like its nonsensical in feet (5280ft), its nonsensical in yards (1760y)

is this just a case of the imperial system actually being a bunch of equally nonsensical units of measurement tacked onto eachother?

is the mile completely detached from the shorter range units of measurement????

@coolbeans 1760 was the year the mile was officially standardized, which is why they used 1760 yards

whats funny is a roman mile might actually be closer to 1000 yards than a modern american one, since that was just derived by „1000 paces“, which is…. quite close to 1000 yards as a matter of fact
