how do you like your graphical apps installed?
@nano mostly flatpak! But sometimes native.
I recently switched to Flatpak Steam. Always has a weird misconception it was bad vs native but it works fine so far.
@nano Packaged for my distro, binary or if absolutely required - appimage.
Everything else is a crime and should not exist.
@nano Basically every single time I've had an issue with an app, the solution was always "just use flatpak". At this point for me if an app isn't available as a flatpak it might as well not exist for me, with very few exceptions
@nano if it’s in my package manager, i will install it that way.
if it’s not, i will go find the source code, learn how to build it, and then package it for my package manager. then it will be in my package manager, and i will install it from my package manager.
if that doesn’t work, it probably won’t work on my computer anyway. if i really want to run it, i’ll switch to a different computer and if there’s a flatpak, i’ll reluctantly use that. otherwise, if there’s a bare binary, i’ll try it, but it probably won’t work, so i’ll likely have given up at that point.
if i’m still trying, it’s probably because i need whatever the thing is for my dayjob, so i’ll switch to my work laptop’s ubuntu install and use whatever installation method remains.
i would like to have a word with the one person that said snap
@nano *confused look* where’s the source distribution option?
@nano distributed binaries usually aren’t reproducible!
@polychromata well i only had 5 slots and figured source compilation would be too niche ;w;
@nano i much prefer going through my package manager. second only to that, appimage and bare binary kinda tie? and then flatpak last. snap doesn't even rank in my choices because i've had such awful experiences that it's literally more worth it to me to avoid apps i can only get as snap
flatpak is kinda weird imo. i like the idea of it but i've had lots of experiences with flatpak causing issues for me, i.e. lots of emulators are packaged without access to /mnt
where i have my big storage drive mounted (i swear it's like nothing even acknowledges /mnt
exists!!) so even if it's mild i'll often find myself needing to bust open flatseal just for that, or things get really fucky when it comes to flatpak apps that need to interact with non-flatpak apps i have installed (i have had so so many issues using anki in its flatpak form that relate to this, to the point that i'm often tempted to try compiling it myself again so i don't have to use the anki flatpak lol)
@nano SO HEAVY, OBESE EVEN
tha't why not even appimage but at least its somewhat portable.
@k flatpak does de-duplication. btrfs can do it too
@username9431 i dont want it to become the ONLY option, because options are good, but i want it to be the default, the bare minimum
@nano basically whatever my distro ships. usually this means aur (arch) or flatpak (fedora). but when I'm on ubuntu I will willingly use snap, because it's the least annoying to get working (all the permissions and themes and stuff is already figured out)
@nano Enrage the entire Linux community by saying that you like to install your apps through DEB or RPM files.
