you blow in this side and the air goes through the vessel. it just goes straight through. no, it does not induce magic fields in the surroundings. yes, the particles flow in the direction that leads out.
also they're way cooler. when electricity contacts it makes no noise or maybe a little "click"
with pneumatics it goes PSHHHHHH and when you run it it goes PSHHHHHH and when something is leaking it goes PSHHHHH
it's so fun i love pneumatics
anyway all this is to say i'm designing a high pressure pneumatic nerf gun
bonus points: not a firearm, can't be used to pin me to extra charges in court
i am very quickly running into the problem that 500psi and foam darts do not work even in purely mechanical theory
how do you load a dart from a nerf magazine into a barrel without having the bolt pull be way, way too long
the annoying bit is that i could 100% make this work. the problem would just be that it would have 3000 extremely intricate bits that would need to be lubricated and easily replaceable when they snap, and i really don't want to have to replace 3000 carefully-machined 5mm thick pieces that undergo 35% deformation as part of normal operation
that just seems like a bad time
@niko honestly i think the dart would probably be fine it's just trying to get the dart to an environment where i can safely and efficiently deliver those 500psi that causes problems
@doskel Rotate the barrel up to the next nerf dart? Sort of like a Gatling gun?
fuuuuuck i really want to make this an automatic reciprocating bolt but a revolving one is like the only way i can think of that would work
also the bolt would basically need to be locking and designing that to be possible to machine myself sounds like a royal pain in the ass
i mean, maybe i could do a rotating bolt, but then i'd also need some mechanism to rotate that
maybe one of those spinny linear actuators that are in disc drives?
that said the "doskel builds a nerf gun" thread will probably be more useful in court than the entire kolektiva dump
the play-by-play posting here is going to give verity's favoriting hand a workout though
first thing i'm tackling is pressurizing the vessel that'll be attached to the bolt and actually dump into the dart
the problem is that it reciprocates, so i need to have it repeatedly connect and disconnect from a fill valve connected to the CO2 cartridges
i can pretty easily come up with a mechanism to make this work, but the problem again strikes that for this design to work i'd need some extremely precisely manufactured parts that i don't think i can DIY
the biggest "simple" mechanical consideration is trying to make a slider that will push another piece along when it moves one way, but then disengage at the end of its travel and spring back
again, doable but would be stupid fragile and for something that'll ideally work at >250psi and fling big hunks of metal around at speed, i'm quite worried about it breaking
wait i have brain damage i can just have the pin that's allowing flow retract once the inner thing has reached the right pressure
it's so easy why didn't i think of it before
@doskel
In Australia we banned assault rifles, but you can still build a spud gun: https://www.ssaa.org.au/?ss_news=spud-gun-not-a-lethal-weapon
@stib i remember an aus friend sending me a picture of the extremely specific exemption for amateur radio antenna launchers
