It turns out that the primary difference between a generic gamer forum and a massive, centralized social network is a few billion dollars.

Other than that, most of the same problems remain, only at scale.

In the past, I tried to never join an online community that had a wealthy cishet dude running things. Nothing good ever came of it for me, and I ended up in toxic messes when I made exceptions.

I always ended up starting my own communities instead. Decentralization is just better.
