@ivy by being 18 and not knowing how crippling the debt you’re signing up for is!

@lunareclipse @ivy student loans is the answer, and they don’t come cheap, of course

@lunareclipse @ivy well, in England, the Government, through the Student Loans Company Ltd, will loan you money to cover tuition and then another loan to cover living costs (but it’s definitely not enough). The interest rate is something like 5% + inflation, but it varies. I owe like £55k to SLC, even though my total principle amount was only ~£40k

@ivy @lunareclipse to be fair, you only need to pay it back as a proportion of your income over a certain amount ~£25k/y. Since I earn below that, I haven’t paid any of it back since I graduated, but the interest still adds on

@ivy phd students do not take on debt so it was very frustrating two years ago to apply to several phd programs get rejected from all of them then asked to apply to masters programs which do put you into debt

@AppleAmps it's ok, I made it work but like this seems so ridiculous, like everyone is suffering under this but there's no sign of it changing

@ivy
For the courses I had to pay for I worked full time during the day and ran across town to do a full time course load at night.
