I'm glad people are talking about deltarune with actual nuance. Undertale was not a remotely perfect experience or story, and is worthy of dissection on that basis, but suffered from the Steven Universe effect: that is to say, a seeming categorical unwillingness on the part of a huge percentage of critical analyses to engage with it on its own terms; Steven Universe's thesis was not "we should just forgive and befriend colonizers." Undertale's thesis was not "never ever hurt anyone ever even in self defense or you're evil".

There's a worthwhile discussion to be had as to how well they made their core arguments if those wound up being a lot of peoples' takeaway, but that's simply not what those stories were about and to act like it was is disingenuous

@swiff tbh i wish i paid better attention to undertale’s deeper story, but i was like 12 when i played it and haven’t touched it since

@swiff the people who thought that Undertale is about how liberal pacifism is Very Good must've played a different game than I did. my takeaway was something like, "don't destroy people for the crime of being flawed."
