Now that I live in Chile I'm starting to fully wrap my head around the sheer extent of the damage that Pinochet and the CIA did, and like, fuck. They took the world's first democratically elected socialist government, the most promising left wing project in recorded human history, and they systematically crushed it, first economically, then diplomatically, and finally through sheer terroristic violence, just because they couldn't stand brown people's lives being made better through a way other than liberal capitalism. September eleventh deserves to be recognized as a day of mourning not just because of what happened on 2001, but also because of the thousands of lives lost as a result of 1973.

Not really anything specific, sorry! I do believe what I said but it was mostly gleaned from reading Wikipedia (and the sources section therein) and talking with people on the ground here and in Argentina.
