i only know that vlc uses libmodplug for tracker music, while ffmpeg uses libopenmpt, and i was told that libmodplug is shit (less accurate and less formats supported, and also less maintained (if at all)) compared to libopenmpt. there is a 10 years old gitlab issue to replace libmodplug with libopenmpt in vlc, still open today
