@amy so i don’t fully agree with the sentiment, but only based on the definition of “try to win” and the genre of the game. like, tf2 has no competitive scene (basically) and it’s because because it isn’t fun, but that doesn’t make tf2 bad! it’s just not a game designed to support that. but! if a game like overwatch couldn’t support a higher level competitive scene, then that is problematic, as the game is supposed to support a competitive scene. i don’t know much about magic, but i do know that the game supports a high-level competitive scene, and so a rule set that can’t is (probably) poorly designed.

Ultimately it's not even "competitive scenes" that I mean; if someone can join your game and try to win and that ruins it for you, it was a bad game the whole time
