In my framework of ethics, the ranking is as such, ranked from 1 (best) to 3 (worst)

1: Improve the person's life so much that they don't want to die anymore.
2: Let them die in peace.
3: Force them to continue their suffering or even add extra suffering (for example by restraining them in a mental ward).

Unfortunately mainstream society got it entirely wrong and ranks it more like 3-1-2 in practice.

@LunaDragofelis yeah, exactly. everyone should have the right to die if they want. and no, no one does the first point. you need to be really lucky, have money, and put a lot of work into it - no one is gonna do it for you.

@LunaDragofelis I do agree with that ranking but everything in someone’s power should be put into 1, 2 should be the absolute last resort, and 3 shouldn’t exist

@rpmrosie Yes, I agree with you on that. And I really hate how mainstream society puts all its energy into 3 instead.

@LunaDragofelis i mean the *point* of mental wards is to facilitate some sort of "1," but like. that's the ideal. not necessarily reality.

@LunaDragofelis only tangentially related, but honestly this is why all my plans for suicide involve

  1. only doing so if we've fucked ourselves into a corner we have little to no chance of getting out of
  2. requiring some preperation so we can't just do it on impulse
  3. using a method quick enough so that if we go through with it anyway, we won't live long enough to meaningfully regret our choice

it's quite morbid, but we've always been one to prepare for the worst

@raphaelmorgan as a species dysphoric person, I would probably make use of a euthanasia program if I was eligible.

The "1" solution would involve the development of freedom of form technology, which would be incredibly cool, but also at least 25 years of suffering away, even under the most optimistic assumptions about the future.

@LunaDragofelis 3, 1, 2 if we're lucky. Places with a euthanasia program are more like 3, 2, 1

@LunaDragofelis the problem with that is that everywhere those programs are available, they're used to target disabled people who *could* have improved lives. People who request accommodations. I don't think there can ever exist a euthanasia program that isn't used as an excuse to kill off people who just need help, because when the abled thinks of a life not worth living they just think of being at all disabled :/

@raphaelmorgan Yeah, I'm aware of this unfortunate ableist reality.

I do however think it would be good if the sale of suicide methods like pentobarbital (the drug used to put down sick pets) to individuals wasn't made so heavily illegal and difficult.

@LunaDragofelis agreed, then it goes into bodily autonomy territory. The government, doctors, etc, should never be able to suggest someone die or "help" them with it, but they also shouldn't be able to force you to live
That said, I'm hoping that in the time it takes you to find a method that works for you, you find something to live for instead. Or something to help with your dysphoria in the meantime before species transition gets more advanced

@LunaDragofelis pretty sure if legalized access to euthanasia would be locked behind psychiatry the same way gender marker changes used to be before SBGG.

And I still technically don’t have access to therapy/HRT/hair removal, I just kinda started DIYing that stuff, but I’m kind of at a wall with the therapy part, because at this point I’d like stuff actually diagnosed by a professional, but none of them even want to see me because there are “more urgent cases”.

DIYing such suicide methods sounds like all kinds of bad ideas to me, a lot can go wrong there, especially failing to achieve death and just ending up with a non-lethal, but incredicbly painful and traumatizing experience.

Unfortunately the current state of mental health is trying to “fix” people as fast as possible to get them back to work, because our only value seems to be that and paying too many taxes, a lot of which goes straight back to corporations underpaying their workers.
