Say what you will about China but their CO2 emissions have plateaued for 18 months. They appear to be the only adults in the room.

@benlockwood

And that terrifies Trump's oil backers.

@benlockwood

Is it good that emissions are flat in China? Yes, absolutely.

Is it impressive? Yes, in a way.

Is it the result of a totalitarian society? Yes.

Is such a feat only possible through totalitarianism? NO. NOPE. IT IS NOT.

It's definitely not wrong to point out items #1 and #2 above, but I believe it's irresponsible not to mention #3 and especially #4, because otherwise many people have been primed to jump to #4 as a corollary of #3, which it is not.

Also absolutely worth noting that ecofascism cannot save the planet from global warming in the long run, because it demands centralization of power, and no centralized authority can be kept out of bad hands indefinitely.

@benlockwood It's obvious DC cares nothing for the environment or We The People. They only care for money and power.

@benlockwood I remember an anti-eco argument 10+ years ago being, “Why should the US constrain itself in the fight against climate change because China is just going to continue to emit tons…”

Welp looks like that straw man was a straw man.

@benlockwood @hypebot I share the opinion, that the transition is driven by a strategic agenda. Less gas and oil, less dependence on foreign countries and assets. Also more resilience against sanctions and cut offs.

@benlockwood this feels a little misleading to suggest that China plateauing proves that they're the only people taking climate policy seriously!

US and EU emissions have been dropping substantially, for instance, and by that logic they must be saints!

@apophis my understanding is they've been pushing huge investments in alternative energy and not allowing any new fossil fuel power for a while now.
