i wish truly portable handheld gaming systems got a revival. steam decks and nintendo switches and aya neos and all that stuff is cool but you can’t carry one around in our pocket like a 3ds or a psp. i think that kind of form factor is the pinnacle of handheld gaming and it saddens me that the big gaming companies aren’t making them anymore
the 3ds was the perfect console. no bigger than a modern phone, you can put it in your pocket. streetpass is an incredibly fun feature, much more so in its prime. 3d capability can be considered a stupid gimmick but it’s well utilized in several games, like super mario 3d land, where the 3d gives you some very helpful depth perception. on top of that, its second screen and touchpad makes it an incredibly versatile system. warioware gold is a good way to show this. on top of that it even has a camera and microphone built in. the second screen can also be a great place for developers to put hud elements that they don’t want on the main screen. nearly all multiplatform games do this, and it’s a very nice feature that can sometimes make for a better experience on 3ds then on other platforms
and it was such a fun system too. miiverse, mii plaza, face raiders… all that stuff could never happen again because nintendo wants their consoles to be boring gray boxes on the inside now.
and the modding capability is insane. it’s incredibly easy to do it and there’s so much custom firmware you can install. music players, breaking bad ports, even an entire replacement for nintendo’s online servers
god i love the 3ds. i think it was the best console to ever come out of the big three console companies
@strongsand there’s this https://www.ayntec.com/products/ayn-thor
@strongsand i do love 3d. i wish 3d screens were easier and more prolific
@shroomie it looks great but it wont get any first party support, unless its emulating the 3ds or wii u or smth theres not much point in a second screen
