to be clear, im not doing this. BUT some random white guy is miles morales for halloween at my job rn but he hasnt used any AAVE or anything so im conflicted how to take that lol

i THINK it might be kind of good? like its promoting the black spiderman as The Spiderman, which honestly i love miles as a character way more than peter parker so thats cool. idk man, just checking myself yall

What even is the point then? Like if you're just using the costume or whatever why not just go peter parker.

I guess, like, hm. It's also kinda weird to, like, mandate people exclusively dress up as characters of their race, right? So I guess there's nothing *wrong* with it even though I personally don't get the impulse.

@AppleAmps what if you like, like miles morales?

black cosplayers do this all the time, they’ll cosplay white people tons, it’s often a subject of great discussion on twitter because no one can be normal about it

Sure but in my mind there's a difference between cosplaying a character you like and wearing a spiderman bodysuit for halloween. Like, I guess generally I assume if you're wearing a superhero costume it's less because you're a fan of the specific superhero and more because "superhero" is a broadly appealing category.

@AppleAmps really? i mean, i guess? idk, halloween costumes are of a few distinct types, i think

  1. cosplay
  2. generic
  3. gimmick

those are the main ones, if i had to say

cosplay is fandom. generic is like β€œim a Ghost” or β€œim a Scary Surgeon”. and gimmick is like- dressing up as a twitter post, or like- wearing a costume that does something very particular and gimmicky, yknow
