A guy involved in a crypto scam that might bring down the Argentinian president is going on a bunch of podcasts, incriminating himself

Meanwhile, the Hawk Tuah lady has listened to her lawyers and gone radio silent since her meme coin flopped

One of these people is smarter

(this is over an hour of a guy basically saying, "what am I supposed to do, not scam people???". Long interview, but honestly shocking to me)

@healyn @saraphim idk milei has done so many things like this that I’m skeptical of any new absurd thing he does actually ending his presidency tbh

Hi! Argentine here!

I struggle to imagine this'll end his presidency but it's by FAR the most outrageous thing he's done so far, it's the biggest scandal of his presidency by a longshot.

@aismallard @saraphim I was definitely exaggerating, but it's still such a goofy reason to face possible impeachment (deserved, but goofy!)

It could, maybe, sway the midterms out of his favor and make him more unpopular in the region. Who knows though.

@AppleAmps @saraphim @aismallard It SHOULD be a huge scandal. Trump has so many scandals, nobody here even pays attention to him and his wife making a shit ton of money on meme coins last month

Also you have no real opposition party and the state (or its billionaire cronies) control so much of the media his scandals don't get reported or talked about.
Argentine media is also oligarchic and sycophantic but it has a budget orders of magnitude lower so people can't really be assed to run with "the official narrative" during times like this. One of the biggest developments in this scandal came out of the social media manager for one of the biggest news companies just forgetting to air the sanitized, cut down version of a softball interview with Milei and posting the raw footage instead. Plus the opposition Peronists and Socialists, despite being marred by infighting and low inertia, are still dedicated in some ways to bringing milei down unlike the dems in the US.

Noticeable pattern since Trump first got elected in 2016 of guys thinking they can brazenly get away with these crimes--Fyre Festival guy did fraud with the Fyre Festival, then had a documentary crew follow him around while he did MORE crimes

SBF did a bunch of podcasts explaining crimes he was doing

Here's another guy with the Argentina meme coin. Little tip: You have to be able to OFFER TRUMP SOMETHING! Ask Eric Adams

@healyn People like SBF think that if they come up with a clever enough way to frame a crime it’s no longer a crime.

“I just told them things, talking isn’t illegal”, etc.

@maddiefuzz how can anyone hate on something called "effective altruism"?

@healyn It’s right there in the name, you can’t call things something they aren’t

Just look at national socialism

@0x4d6165 I think if someone goes on the show with the mission of being antagonistic towards him, it's a good idea to try to reach a wider audience. But I agree with your broader point (fuck him)

@AppleAmps @saraphim @healyn @aismallard lol just watched that, hilarious, is that what it was. https://elpais.com/argentina/2025-02-19/el-escandalo-de-la-criptomoneda-libra-coloca-a-milei-ante-su-peor-crisis-en-mas-de-un-ano-de-gobierno.html

the other difference with the US is we have never, ever jailed our presidents for committing crimes, whereas Argentina (and plenty of other Latin American countries) has a rich history of this.
