Been watching Chainsmoker Cat and it's sooooooo nice to watch a show that chooses to engage with cigarettes as physical items with all the sensory baggage they have and not as the aesthetic signifiers they've been made into.

So much media about smokers and smoking makes it out to be sexy, the act of burning up your life to live in the moment, the intellectual's vice or whatever, and that's all bullshit! Smoking isn't sexy, it's disgusting. It cloaks everything in yellow grimey soot and it smells like ass. The predominant narrative about tobacco is fabricated by companies to sell carcinogens to you and Yani Neko pokes and prods at that. It's really good.

Not to kinkshame but I genuinely die inside whenever people do the "ohhh I wish a hot mommy would put her cigarette out on me,,,," routine. Your brain has been hijacked by Philip Morris.

Oh and the opening, too. The opening! It's this massive homage to a bunch of smoking scenes from popular media, most of them scenes that use the cultural shorthand of cigarettes as classy and carefree, it's almost like the show wants to allude to all of that as bombastically as possible so it can slam down on you with the genuinely uncomfortable realities of abuse and marginalization. Good stuff.

@AppleAmps if you’ve read sherlock holmes you’d know that the intellectual’s vice is cocaine.
