today's victim will be a lenovo ideacentre K410 desktop computer. i think it has 4GB of RAM (assuming it was never upgraded) and it has a 128GB SSD i put in there.

@mjdxp
Studies suggest you're the first person to ever do this.

@AppleAmps possibly because i've done it once before a few months ago

this computer was released around 2012 and originally ran windows 8, but it's currently running windows XP. old desktops from around this period make pretty good windows XP machines because usually the hardware still supported XP, and with their pretty good for XP specs they'll run pretty fast. also, no one wants them anymore so you can get them fairly cheap. however i never really did anything with this XP install so it's getting netBSD

i've installed netBSD on a real computer once before, except it was on a nearly 30 year old SPARC sun workstation, so i presume installation and usage will be pretty different. for reference, the sun workstation couldn't even run xfce (i think it actually refused to even run any modern GTK3 apps) and it struggled a little bit with FVWM. the lenovo has 8 times as much RAM and probably a significantly more powerful CPU with more features so it'll probably be a much smoother experience

@_daisy debian (and linux in general) is a lot easier to use these days compared to the BSDs. the hardware and software support is way better on linux, especially with tools like wine and flatpak which other unix likes don't have. netBSD is especially a bit archaic feeling as it doesn't currently support certain features like wayland, meaning a lot of modern desktop environments aren't supported.

well, this is an unfortunate first hurdle, my 1024x768 CRT is apparently too narrow to display the installer -_- i wonder if i can make the font smaller

okay, found the command to fix the font size, now it's working (i think)

it seems to have misidentified my 128 GB SSD as a 512 GB SSD? either that's either going to cause problems or i forgot how big the drive i put in here is

i think the problem is probably it getting the disk size wrong. i very often have issues with this SSD to the point where i think it's actually defective.

not netBSD's fault, it's lexar's fault for making this SSD that's half broken

@mjdxp@labyrinth.zone have you tried partitioning in the installer to only use within the first 100GiB or so? if it's defective or maybe even a counterfeit, and is lying about its size one way or the other, then the first part of the disk before then might still be good

okay, so after looking at all of the other computers i have available, i've found that none of them are going to work for various reasons, including losing the power adapter for a laptop and another laptop not having enough ports. so, i am not going to be installing netBSD.

for now.
