CC @ matrix and @ elementary

both of you have discussions about this, Thunderbird serves as an example in communications software and KDE as Linux Desktop software and both of them worked. Please just copy them PLEASEEE

@shroomie

They tripled becauase Thunderbird started asking directly in the software once a year instead of only on social media. It completely cut out the “must be a thunderbird user that ALSO uses social media and ALSO follows us” and reduced it down to just “must use thunderbird”

Those increases in donations are directly attributed to reaching Thunderbird users that don’t use social media, don’t read the blog etc. Same goes for KDE and Plasma

literally every single project that did this has been a success story in donations, there is no downsides

@alexia @shroomie oh, so kinda like wikipedia, accept less annoying?

@green @shroomie

Exactly! They both ask once in December every year, and have a toggle to disable it entirely. Despite this thunderbird donations went from ~2 Million € to ~6 Million € basically the second they implemented it

@alexia @green and specifically its donation system

@shroomie @green Wikipedia has enough money and assets that it could keep running as-is for the next 100 years or whatever insane number it was, their campaigns are way too aggressive

I wonder how the foundation could do that with so many clients though… maybe asking through that matrix.org room they're gonna warn about rate limits anyway?

@campos @green @shroomie

There is already mechanisms for this that they can use.

@campos @shroomie @alexia hmmm, wasn’t the a similar controversy where the mastodon app asked for donations going to mastosoc instead

@green @campos @shroomie

No it was that the Mastodon official app added a “donate” button but ONLY if you were on Mastodon.social

On Matrix, the tooling for an admin to send a notice to their users of this kind is already there. On any server.

Announcement rooms, for example, which they’re already gonna use for the upcoming changes
