it's still wild how the "modders added it so mojang lazy!" argument still gets thrown around even when the fucking modders they use as examples go "this is literally not how it works"

@SSM230 bonus points when the mojang dev theyre complaining to is a former modder

@SSM230 iirc isn't it more about poor management on Mojang's part as opposed to a lack of talent on the team? That's what I've heard is the more likely culprit

@SSM230 Either way it still just ends up feeling empty whenever I see things like the mob vote because they're showing us features that will very deliberately be cut from the game just for hype (given I'm not someone who's cared about vanilla in god knows how long, but at this point the only reason I'd care to switch versions is security patches or a gated mod update like Create 0.5c)

@wish It has more to do with the fact that there's a massive string of planning and checks that have to be done (Optimization, ensuring it's good for a bunch of different playstyles, the overal quality of the feature itself, among other things). All of this needing to be done in two completely different codebases further complicates the whole process even further.

Almost all of this is something a modder is completely free to ignore or not even have to deal with at all, which is why they can get more content out and faster.

@SSM230 Definitely understandable, but in the case of feature votes it still ends up feeling like Mojang is throwing out content that a sizable number of people want, or that what people are voting for is shallow. In my eyes the company as a whole could spread their team out a bit more to flesh out these features and delay the update to ship all of them; with the votes it feels like they're just doing things for PR

@wish The mob vote mostly comes out of a marketing stunt more than an inability to get all mobs in time.

They could delay the update and add all three, but they would miss on weeks of discussion about the game that further popularize it, so they make a vote to get people talking. After that they can easily repurpose the other mob's features into something else.

@SSM230 It feels like there's a timeline where there's a few extra pre-releases hyping up each of the mobs as opposed to a vote, giving the weeks worth of discussion without people feeling like they're missing out on features; if the team can pull it off then it shouldn't be a problem, but alas, "tried and true" marketing
