@winterklaus not putting any points into national self-hate is like not putting any points into a weapons skill in a crpg. you think its all just 'fun' and then because you didnt build correctly your life falls apart 'out of nowhere' and you 'dont know why'.

@winterklaus nationalism and its consequences has been disastrous for the human race but like. unlike the thing the “x and its consequences” snowclone is originally about, the industrial revolution, i’m having trouble coming up with many, if any, good things that happened because of national identity. maybe the defeat of the confederate united states? problem with that is that they are also a product of national identity

@shroomie @winterklaus People talk about "liberatory nationalism", but almost all of that comes with some very... unsavory side effects. Kurdish nationalism being Anti-Assyrian, Vietnamese nationalism coming at the expense of minority rights, almost all nationalism seemingly having some baked-in superiority complex and racism

@shroomie nah ur right. at best u can maybe say something like modern nation formation is "historically progressive" vs the kinds of tyranny preceding them, or like be critically supportive of national liberation... but for me that's more like being worthwhile *in spite of* nationalism

@maidservantofnanaya @shroomie i will personally be more contextual and careful with how i talk about oppressed nationalisms And in what context that is discursively utilised (i.e. palestinian natlib) but i don't rly disagree with that on its own either

@winterklaus @shroomie Personally I distinguish National Liberation from Nationalism™. Like there were Kurdish-led national liberation movements like Rojava (which included Assyrians, Arabs, Circassians, etc.), and then there is Iraqi Kurdistan, which puts Assyrian denialism in its textbooks

@shroomie im not going out of my way to demand those of oppressed nations to abolish their identity though, there was a reason i scoped what i said initially.

@maidservantofnanaya @shroomie they're kind of on the same spectrum if im honest but there's definitely lines worth drawing between the two

@Erato_Heti exactly, whereas nationalism ought be a dump stat because the skill tree only gives pithy existential stat bonuses without the sort of gear investment only doable for twink charas. counternationalism is far more efficient cus u get to develop a secondary tree far earlier and seek more efficient synergies for ur build
