@ipg the Government actually thought of this ages ago and basically legally, all cities, towns, counties, etc in UK exist only at the pleasure of the Government (and of the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales). So if any settlement really had an independence movement, the Government could send troops into occupy the area and then legally dissolve it to break it up

@yassie_j British once again LARPing as America by sending in troops to break up independence movements except instead of entire countries it's Stoke-on-Trent

@yassie_j @ipg I think originally this was at the pleasure of the Sovereign. Which is why the king, esp. post-1066, just burnt down parts of the country for rebelling

@starfrost @ipg yep, and since the Government acts on behalf of the Sovereign, they have this power

@yassie_j @ipg The harrying of the north is the earliest example of this that comes to mind

@yassie_j @ipg Actually, the devolved governments themselves only exist at the pleasure of the Government in Westminster. If the Scotland Act 1998 and the other legislation that increased the power of the scottish parliament later were to be repealed, the Scottish Government and Parliament would legally cease to exist. Same for the Wales Act

It’s one of those “technically possible but not a great idea”

@yassie_j @ipg so like our entire system of government hahaha

I always remind people that are opposed to creating a republic that Parliament could pass a law tomorrow, if it so wanted, to abolish elections, set up concentration camps, or just order the death of literally everyone in the country - and no court would be able to stop them.
