Apropos of nothing: I consulted with several lawyers when I was researching the OpenPGP book. One of my questions was "could a court compel me to release my passphrase?"

Consensus was that yes, they could.

But what if your passphrase was a confession to a crime? The Fifth Amendment comes into play.

Consensus was: they would ride that case to the Supreme Court. No idea how it would come out, but it would be glorious.
