Something I don't see very often in discussions of Mother 3 is that it's a phenomenally *paced* game, on top of everything else.
Earthbound is like, in the top fifth percentile of games but it suffers from an unforgivably lethargic pace that only loosens up two thirds of the way through.
Mother 3, on the other hand, hits the ground running with its first chapter and never loses steam. It's hard to top the energy of "Cowboy vs Robot Dinosaurs" and yet it DOES, over and over again, pumping the brakes to let the narrative build but never enough that it starts to feel bloated. What a fantastic game.

Most games try to be "fun" just because within the zeitgeist that's the emotional beat that videogames are "supposed" to hit. When the designers for, say, Call of Duty decide to make the experience of playing their game fun over everything else it's less in service of any conscious thematic exploration and more so just because, y'know, it's a videogame and they want it to sell.

I think what sets the Mario franchise apart is that those games are as committed to exploring the mechanical *meaning* of fun as the Pathologic franchise is to exploring the feeling of dying alone on the Russian steppe. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best game of all time because it commits to delivering fun with every design decision and aesthetic element.

Didn't notice it was Mother 3's 20th anniversary until just now, woah.

Anyways, play it if you haven't yet, it's the best JRPG around and it only goes on for like 25 hours. Also, partway through the first chapter you might meet a familiar looking enemy ;)

My headcanon is that in-universe Dexit is due to some Pokémon being illegal to own in certain regions.

You can own any Pokémon under the sun in god-fearing Unova because it's a first amendment right, but over in prissy nanny state Galar you get your Toucannon confiscated, it's cute.

community guidelines

  1. you must be over 14 years old to join. coral castle's servers are hosted in chile, and under article 19,628 of the laws of chile, we are unauthorized to collect data from people under 14.
  2. do not spam or raid. the fediverse is not your space to intoxicate.
  3. nsfw/nsfl content must be marked as sensitive. coral castle is built to be used as a casual instance, and as such should be accessible anywhere.
  4. hate speech, paraphilia, and harassment will get you banned. having basic human decency is key anywhere. whether it is in real life or on the internet, don't be a jerk.
  5. keep things legal. this includes pirated content, since we want to keep a good relationship across fediverse servers. posting CSAM is strictly forbidden and will result in legal action.

moderation policies

the sanctions for local users will be relative to the gravity of their infringements, varying from simply deleting the offending material, to warning the user through a three-strike system, to immediately banning the offending user.
