me: whats that one c64 styled platform game about a smiling stickman gravity-shifting in order to rescue his crew?
the really helpful gentlemen right in front of me:
Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.
The precis of Starmerβs demise is thus. This is a man who rehsaped the Labour party in order to make it a machine that could win power from general election. He did not reshape it to make a machine that could use that power to govern. Pair this with a hostile media that saw anything to the left of Mussolini as socialism and you find a leader who is stuck in a killzone but did not prepared themselves for that situation.
This, to me, is the folly of Starmer. It is government by focus group, rather than by volition. It is about chasing the mythical floating voter, chasing the media, and chasing the polling, instead of getting down and dealing with fundamental issues. What is the Labour party if its convictions change with the wind?
Starmer framed himself as a competent, no-nonsense βadult in the roomβ. Indeed, it was a change from the pompous oafishness of Johnson and Truss, and the delusions of grandeur of Sunak. Being plain and and inoffensive is nothing wrong. Clement Attlee had the charisma of a wet towel, and he managed to fundamentally reform the UK for the better, in ways we still benefit from today. The difference is that Attlee used his lack of charisma to focus on getting the work done. Starmer is inoffensive, but not able willing to get results that show off his supposed competence.
Changing the leader is perfectly fine. However, replacing him with Andy Burnham may fix the charisma gap. Burnham may be able to charm the media. But so was Blair and Brown and Johnson, until the media turned on them. It wonβt be enough, if he isnβt willing to focus on the fundamentals of governance.
