almost certainly not a real person

i'll accept most follow requests, and I'm probably a lot more scared of you than you are of me. let's be friends.

holding opinions is inherently problematic. you should just do things and don't think

just saw a mastodon user describe the rest of the fediverse as "mastodon clones" and I am on the precipice of becoming a cybercriminal

@octofloofy @Clygro This frustrates me a lot about the discourse around leaving centralized online communities: it kind of presupposes that we all have no friends lol

I got off most centralized social media by... moving across the country and cutting contact with most of the people in my life. And even then I found myself relying on discord again within a year.

@Clygro Now is probably the time to start working to make sure the alternatives are robust enough to catch the fall. The fediverse seemed to handle twitter fallout pretty well but I'm a little worried the matrix ecosystem isn't accessible enough to handle a discord collapse... Maybe revolt could one day, though I've never tried it

@Clygro Yeah the discord thing sounds very frustrating. I’ve become pretty passive on people enforcing discord usage in my life since it is honestly a pretty big step up from facebook messenger which I had to deal with for years, but you know they’re inches away from being fully subsumed into enshitification. It’s already happening, and none of those communities seem to be preparing for it

@Clygro Leaving shit closed source centralized platforms has always been hard because leaving communities you're invested in is hard, but I find it's gotten a bit easier now that so many of those communities have gone to shit

I walked into a conversation guns blazing today by making the claim that science is colonialist before realizing everyone disagreed with me, and ended up having to defend it almost from first principles. That was an extremely strange social situation to have to worm my way out of...

I feel like the internet has given me the opportunity to be a lot looser with my lips when it comes to expressing things that I believe but that often translates poorly into the real world when you're surrounded by real and often very normal people

it's a myth that tenants create maintenance costs. anyone living in a space creates maintenance needs. that's called wear and tear. there are also some kinds of maintenance that happen even if no one is living there, like roof repair or replacing a furnace.

owning property means needing to cover the costs of the property, whether you personally live there or not.

so landlords are really only giving up one thing, which is their own ability to stay in the property. many of them don't even want to stay in their properties anyway. so why do they have the property at all?

@nyaa I haven't been on beehaw in a while but I can totally see this. Having a lot of content show up in your feed for a link aggregator is the difference between it being, well, a link aggregator, and it being a group chat where five people send each other cool blog posts. Both are nice, but the latter is not really what lemmy is best suited for

@crlf it changes a lot after children of dune, at least in absurdity. I have a hard time talking about god emperor of dune without feeling like that guy from the meme gesturing wildly at strings on a cork board.

@desea @efi I've been thinking for a while it'd be cool to have a kind of limited quarantine, where anyone less explicitly blocked instances can see stuff from your instance initially, and when someone interacts with your instance for the first time, their content is hidden from local users pending being added to the allowlist by a moderator. That might help with streamlining the process of adding small/single-user instances

It'd sort of involve reaching outside of the activitypub conception of what it means to federate with an instance, though.

wait, 90% of this metadrama wouldn't exist if the default federation was allowlist everywhere, like... a webring...
