Exploring the Fediverse, and other distributed means of creation. Debian Linux user. Picker. Grinner.
@vwbusguy @eingfoan @zem @heiseonline

I'm not sure if it's better to have something for years, then have it taken away, or to never have it in the first place.

#RedHat seems to be all about clawing back things it has provided previously.

I've said it a few times: Red Hat can do what it wants. Nobody has to like it.

I think RH hoped users would choose #CentOS Stream over #RockyLinux and #AlmaLinux *just because*. Crippling the downstreams is one way to get there ... I guess.

Aside from the ability to contribute, how is Stream better than Alma/Rocky/RHEL?

If Stream is not as good as RHEL for production, at least in some way, how do you *sell* it?

Are there ways that Stream is as good as -- or better than -- RHEL?

@eingfoan @zem @heiseonline Basically, you have access to the source if you are a RHEL subscriber, but if you redistribute that source (which GPL explicity allows), you may be in violation of your Red Hat subscription terms, meaning you may get cut off from RHEL and access to those and future sources by extension. Whether or not it's legal is a matter of debate, but definitely a blow to downstream open source projects and their users.

The site hosting my #Mastodon account, ruby.social, is down today. And my personal #GoToSocial instance is still offline, so it's all #Akkoma for me today from the delightful seafoam.space.

With this #RedditMigration, you know what people haven’t been talking about recently?

#Bluesky.

AT protocol was obviously not ready for a #RedditMigration, it’s not even ready for federation, and is years behind #ActivityPub.

Bluesky might be okay if you just want pre-Elon Twitter and to watch the old Twitter royalty do their thing. But it is not equipped to handle a variable use cases that can only happen through federation.

Each day Bluesky does not federate is a moment it’s ceding territory to #Mastodon, #Friendica, #Calckey, #Kbin, etc.

How good is Akkoma at multimedia? Here is a recording I made today.

@arpcomics
Well, Calckey will get a rebrand and a new name really soon.

I just upload / download my follower lists and run a and a account personally. I post to both. It means I can still edit or update threads from either. I might miss some followers, who don't follow me back on both, but I don't have any need for follower count anyway, I'm just in for nice interactions, to get info, and talk about stuff.

Just wrote a quick blog post with a few photos of my #Librem5 being upgraded to #Mobian / #Debian 12:

@coachtony @liaizon @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton The fact that FB is likely to become a primary marketing voice for the Fediverse is real. This has pros and cons to give some thought to.

I saw this movie before when I was at Netscape. Microsoft did an incredibly effective job marketing the Internet to the world, effectively echoing and magnifying Netscape's own talking points. They also copied everything we built so they became the face of the internet.

It has been a couple of good days for my GoToSocial server on the Raspberry Pi Zero W. The server has been running and responsive to requests the whole time.

Something is funky somewhere in the hardware-software chain. When I tried to restart the GoToSocial service with systemctl every four hours, that made the system less stable.

Ideally I'd like to try the system on different hardware. There are Pi 400's available today, but I really don't need a Pi with a keyboard. I'd rather get something smaller with a case. I'm waiting for another 64-bit Pi.

The Zero W's I'm running now are 32-bit, and the one running the database has been very solid.

Instead of complaining about app developers and Flatpak, maybe it's time Linux based OS developers focus on moving forward with things they are responsible for:

* Home encryption
* Authenticated boot
* Read-only /
* Atomic upgrades

It's 2023 and I still can't install and leave Linux unattended to family members and friends.

Flatpak solves real problem and it only gets better with time because it is the right infrastructure for apps on Linux.

To people who keep picking a specific app to "demonstrate" that the Flatpak sandbox is broken: This is called cherry picking.

Nobody claimed the Flatpak sandbox was a magical solution. For certain things apps need upstream support, but hey everyone benefits from it!

• We get proper and secure desktop APIs, yes also non Flatpak
• Apps become more secure over time
• More control to user over permissions and data
• No random files in ~
