Underrated detail I noticed re-reading 17776:

At the start, in the video "what year is it?" they show a list of US presidents, specifically, Tom Cotton winning two terms in 2020 and 2024, Tulsi Gabbard winning two in 2028 and 2032, then Keith Ellison, then George P. Bush, and thennnn....

Bernie Sanders! Seemingly elected in 2044. When I saw that I thought that it was a weird plot hole, like, Bernie's too old to run *now*, by 2044 he'll be dead, right? Oh! Oh yeah!

So, uh, yeah, Jon Bois put in a cool detail showing 17776's plot hook before it gets introduced textually, neat.

Turns out acclaimed web serial 17776 is just an elaborate "here's how Bernie can still win" joke.

@shroomie
It's spoilers that 17776 is about immortality? Isn't that like, the main thrust of the plot?

Also the post itself doesn't even say that, it says that the main plot hook is related to why Bernie Sanders isn't dead but by that metric for all intents and purposes it could be a story about how Vermontians are vampires.

@AppleAmps sorry anyways what i meant to say with that is that it isn’t hard to think “oh sci-fi long form football with people who live longer than you’d expect? that’s immortality” based on what i knew and what you said

Edited yesterday

@AppleAmps i mean its spoilers in the same way someone who is hearing about the stanley parable but knows little about it learning that it’s narrative hook is the concept of a game reset is spoilers

Yeah but like, idk if I'd count "the inciting incident of the story" as a spoiler for basically anything.

@AppleAmps idk i think that basically every part of an experience beyond external critical consensus and general vibe of the most basic promotional material (key art, covers, etc) counts as a spoiler. most of the time i don’t mind but for things i hear particularly great things or which have particularly compelling basic promotional material, i want the smallest amount of spoilers possible
