I read about how in Japan their closest analog to western sports culture are explicitly military-aligned combat sports like sumo and that explains why their culture surrounding stuff like baseball is so rigid and hierarchical. Kinda like that.

Western comics' pseudo-serialization spread across issues you can comfortably get through in like twenty minutes is probably why the medium works so well for me. I was raised on Adventure Time and pacing-wise it's basically the same thing.
