It's pretty notable how the NES was advertised to families with young children, the SNES and Genesis were advertised to bodacious and/or radical tweens, and then the GameCube/PS2 were advertised to young adults. It's like AAA games a medium initially tracked their tones to a single generation of players.

Anyone in Berlin has some spare oral Estradiol? Estrofem or similar, I need about 28mg, before I can restock. I'm already out, had to half my dose yesterday. DHL deleted my package with restock. (Even just a few pills would be great, so that my levels aren't too spiky)

People in fandom put such a large emphasis on a story's characters, it's weird to me. Like, just personally I would much rather read a fanfic set in the world of Disco Elysium with none of the same characters as one with Kim and Harry but none of the stuff that makes Elysium interesting.

That is entirely true but I think I'd make a distinction here between analyses and the kind of "is A better than B?" relative evaluations you usually see for stuff like games, though obviously it exists for movies, music, and the like too.
To understand and analyze a piece by itself you do obviously have to meet it where its at, temporally speaking, but when you're trying to relate it within the greater context of its medium I think some level of detachment is necessary to be able to compare how separate works do similar things. When discussing art doing anything objectively is hard but at least for me it's been way more useful to have a single analytical framework per medium than try to adapt what norms and principles I use depending on, like, the circumstances something was made in.
I guess this does just originate from me being most knowledgeable about games, though. Like, as an artistically capable artform they've only been around for ~50 years so it figures that there'd be less time for that cultural gulf to form like it has with film.

I don't have a bucket list but if I did "play a game of chess against a grand master" would definitely be on it. I would lose, mind you, but I do wish I could see that kind of skill and dedication up close as it wipes the floor with me.

My hot take is that retro or vintage media should be judged first and foremost by modern standards. Of course you're gonna think modern games are 7/10 if the standards you use to judge retro games are "is it better than the Reagan administration"

Just, like, writing off an entire super-category of activities and communities and cultures because of the stuff you've tried up till now feels weird to me. It'd be like someone being forced to listen to Mozart/Beethoven in music class and categorically writing off all music afterwards.
