I'm probably wrong here but it really does seem like 99% of relationship advice is just "talk to each other" and 99% of personal mental health advice is "be as nice to yourself as you are to other people"

the neurotypicals are not okay (a long post about a "parenting neurodiverse kids" class)
Show content

i go to a parenting class for parents of neurodivergent kids. the other parents are all neurotypical.

holy fuck is it a nightmare

i started by trying to empathize with these parents, to some degree. they truly do not understand how their child's brains are wired. and that feels horrible. to feel that disconnected and dissonant with your own kid is painful.

this empathy got me through the first half hour. the remaining 7.5 hours have been slow torment and me learning to control my facial reactions.

"how do i get my son to make eye contact?" you don't

"how can i get my daughter to not repeat the same things she's already said over and over again?" you don't

"how can I get my son to stop telling me about something i don't find interesting?" you don't

"how do I stop feeling guilty about giving my kid adhd?" holy shit get some fucking therapy

"how can I get my son to stop telling me about something i don't find interesting?" What???? Why even become a parent then? Like the point of creating a human being is that you're creating a human being, with like interests and stuff. I don't get how people think of making a child like you're creating a homunculus-style clone of yourself with all your same likes and dislikes.

Yeah, don't wanna be mean but like, it *really* is. Like I get the difference between whiteness and being white but it's giving 2014 buzzfeed reader going "haha yeah all men are soooo awful, no see I'm a *deconstructed* male, you can trust me".

Ok this *is* getting a bit too white guilt, y'know male feminist saying that all men are awful for my liking but I *do* agree that the general ultra-neoliberal protestant culture in places like the US and UK brings out the worst in people. Not saying South American culture is perfect but there's a general trend towards the importance of community and being like, sociable and normal that is deeply missing in most WASP countries.

What a genuinely sad state for a country to be in, jesus fuck. Something over there has to change, and fast.

On the flipside though it's good to know the 500 years curse on Britain the Argentine people placed back in 1833 is still up and running.

Love to see Brazilian oomfs reading my Spanish posts because like, yeah! Our languages are similar enough to be vaguely mutually intelligible when written down, yeah!

Ok to be fair I'm noticing that most of the people in my replies disagreeing with the concept of normies are xnfm users, which, not to throw any inter-instance shade, y'all are cool, but I wonder if it's also possible that the type of person to sign up for an account on a xenofeminist instance that is itself a part of a niche federated social media ecosystem is also the type to not have a traditionally "normal" irl social environment. Still though it WOULD make sense that this is a first world vs third world thing, like you folks are more internet-saturated.

Ok, see, again, this is interesting because most people I've met irl be it here in Chile or back home in Argentina have been just like, football-watching geezers. So either you folks gotta do more like, idk yoga classes to meet more regular people or by virtue of living in third and second world countries where not everyone is just automatically given a gamer pc I've met less deranged individuals.

Ok see I disagree with this fully, but it's hard to diagnose specifically what's going on to make our experiences so different. Either we're hanging out with different normies in different circles or there's something in the UK's groundwater that makes its people uniquely insane when compared to real countries like Chile or Argentina.

You people gotta interact with normies more often, it's like recalibrating your equipment but for the soul.
