I see a lot of people using the term "kidnap" to refer to their government systematically grabbing people off the street and taking them to clandestine detention facilities with seemingly no pretense, and like, that's fine! That's what the word means!
But from a Latin American perspective it's kinda weird to me because I feel like it makes it seem really individualistic? Like, when someone says kidnapping the immediate cultural connotation is a creepy guy in a white van, not the entire force of the state systematically depriving people of their basic freedoms. This is why I prefer the term that most human rights agencies in latam use for this kind of stuff, that being "disappeared", it implies a larger power dynamic than random individuals doing violence on other random individuals.
Everyone's free to use whatever term they want of course, I just thought it was interesting how the phrasing shifts depending on region.

Part of me thinks there are two somewhat distinct varieties of humans:

One can't imagine things that happen to another person happening to themself.

The other can't help but imagine everything that could happen to another person happening to themself.

The former is always surprised by face-eating leopards. The latter can't imagine how the former could be surprised.

it seems like not enough people know this, i didn't until i volunteered at a food pantry

but basically, if you want to support your local food pantry, the best thing you can donate is actually money

most organizations seem to do canned food drives, and donating food isn't bad

but for one thing, if you donate cans from the back of your pantry that you are never going to eat because it's not something you like, the chances of it being something other people like aren't super great

and for another thing, if you buy cans of food at the store to donate, if you gave the money you used to the food pantry directly, then they could buy 8 times as much food with that money as you could, there is this thing that allows them to do that

so basically if you are part of a church or school or whatever sort of organization and want to support your local food pantry, that is a good thing to do, but instead of a canned food drive, another thing you could do is organize some kind of fun event, like a dance or a little carnival or whatever, and have a ticket price, like $5 to get in or something, and give the money to the food pantry and make it clear that's where its going, and get a lot of people to show up. or you could have a bake sale or auction or something, there are probably a lot of other possibilities

I understand that most people's first reaction to the rampant fascism going on in the US is to compare it to Nazi Germany, but I'd argue that what's happening now is a lot closer to the CIA-backed dictatorships that plagued South and Central America during the 70's and 80's. The rampant neoliberal destruction of the administrative state, the forced disappearances, the clandestine detention centers operating within major cities, it's all incredibly hitleresque, of course, but I'd argue it's inspired as much or more by the work of Videla or Pinochet.
